Archipelago/Motorola driver Bryan Herta seventh in Nazareth practice.
NAZARETH, Pa. (August 22, 2003) -- Bryan Herta placed the #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone seventh in today's practice at Nazareth Speedway in preparation for the Firestone Indy 225. Herta lapped the one-mile oval at 165.780 miles per hour (20.3040 seconds).
With cooler temperatures expected for the rest of the weekend, today's practice may not be a good indicator for qualifying or the race because Nazareth Speedway changes dramatically with the weather. The Archipelago/Motorola crew focused on the car's race setup during both practice sessions, trying long runs and working in traffic.
Tomas Scheckter led today's practice with a speed of 169.888 miles per hour. His teammate Scott Dixon was second quick with a speed of 168.956 miles per hour. Gil de Ferran rounded out the top-three at 168.050 miles per hour. Herta's teammate Tony Kanaan was fifth quick on the day with a lap at 166.709 miles per hour. Rookie Dan Wheldon's best speed of 161.583 miles per hour was good enough for 14th.
Qualifying for the Firestone Indy 225 is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. EDT tomorrow, while the 225-lap race -- which will air live on ESPN -- is set for 3 p.m. EDT on Sunday.
Bryan Herta #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We're still searching for the right setup on the Archipelago/Motorola car a little bit. We can do a pretty reasonable lap time, but I'm still not as comfortable as I would like for the race. We're trying to make it so we can pass some cars on the track. We can't just say 'it is difficult to pass here so that's just the way it is;' we have to figure out a way so we can."
Kyle Moyer, Team Manager, Archipelago/Motorola
"We worked on our race setup and by ourselves we were okay and in traffic we struggled a little bit. I think everyone is at the same place right now, but it could be a whole different ballgame tomorrow when the weather cools off."
