Barron is king of competitors at Firestone Indy 200; puts 117 miles on right rear Firehawk to earn win

The Firestone Racing program was eager to demonstrate the quality of its Firehawk racing radials at its hometown track, and Rayovac Blair Racing team driver Alex Barron was the man who helped do that by putting 117 miles on his right rear tire to win tonight's Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville Superspeedway.

"The Firestones were great," Barron said in victory circle. "We had some pickup problems from the other series last night, but so did everybody else. We just shook it off and the tires were great for us all night long. This is a great series, and we're thrilled to be racing in it."

Al Speyer, Firestone Racing Executive Director: "We knew the concrete track here in high summer could be tough, but it was obvious the Firestone engineers did their homework to give the drivers a great tire. The compound/construction combination was obviously right on the mark as these drivers put their tires through a demanding evening of competition. Larry Blair, Tom Gloy and the whole Rayovac Blair Racing team gave Alex a great car and he knew what to do with it. We were proud his tires provided the strength and durability needed to give him his first IRL win. He's a very talented driver and we suspect fans will be seeing a lot more of him in future victory circle celebrations."

Firestone Performance Award: Eddie Cheever will pick up a $10,000 check in the pre-race ceremonies at Michigan International Speedway next weekend for leading at lap 66 in the Firestone Indy 200. The award celebrates Firestone appearing in all 66 IRL events conducted since the inaugural season in 1996.

GM Honors Bridgestone/Firestone: Executives with General Motors visited the Firestone Hospitality Center prior to the start of tonight's race to present Bridgestone/Firestone with its prestigious Supplier of the Year award. The award recognizes quality of products and service.
