RAIN AND COLD WEATHER CANCEL QUALIFYING BUT SUN ARRIVES IN TIME FOR PRACTICE SESSION
MOTEGI, Japan -- More rain showers plagued Twin Ring Motegi Super Speedway today forcing qualifying for the Bridgestone Indy Japan 300 to be canceled. However, a break in the clouds early in the afternoon allowed the sun to shine through, making way for the day's only practice session.
Cool temperatures, damp conditions and a late practice has been the story the past two days at Twin Ring Motegi, but Vision Racing has made the best of it. Tomas Scheckter was 7th fastest overall on the day in the #2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone and Ed Carpenter was 18th quick in the #20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone.
Unfortunately for Scheckter and Carpenter, due to qualifications being canceled, their starting positions are determined based on the entrant point standings heading into this event. That puts Scheckter in the 12th spot on the grid and Carpenter in 19th. Scheckter's 12th place entrant point standing is a result of a ninth place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway and a 12th place finish on the Streets of St. Petersburg. Carpenter did not participate in the first two IndyCar Series events this season due to an accident in open practice at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
In spite of their starting positions, Scheckter and Carpenter expect to move up through the field quickly at the drop of the green flag for tomorrow's race. The Bridgestone Indy Japan 300 is set to commence at noon (GMT plus 9) on Saturday.
Tomas Scheckter -- #2 Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On practice session and starting position:
"This session went well and the car is fast. I'm just a little upset that we weren't able to qualify for the race. We have a good race care and we will do well in the race tomorrow, but it's just disappointing that we couldn't get a better starting position by qualifying. The most important thing is we have a good racecar for tomorrow and we can move up through the field right away."
Ed Carpenter -- #20 Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On practice session:
"Practice went alright. I was glad that the session was an hour and a half because it took me a while to feel comfortable with the car. We ended up alright in the end, but it just took too long to get with it. We'll be fine for tomorrow's race.
On starting position:
"It is disappointing not to have been able to qualify for today's race. Not being able to run the first two races really put us in a hole. But this is a race track where if you have a good car then you'll do fine. It is a long race and we'll be able to get to the front quickly. Not being able to qualify is disappointing, but it is better here at a place where you can pass than at a road course."
