MOTEGI, Japan - Opening day of IndyCar Series track activity for the Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi is complete and Vision Racing drivers Tomas Scheckter, Ed Carpenter and A.J. Foyt IV ranked 12th 13th and 14th on the practice speed charts for Vision Racing.
Leading the team in the 12th spot, Scheckter turned a total of 114 laps in the No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara Honda Firestone. Amongst the Vision Racing trio of drivers, Scheckter has the best finish at Motegi with a 10th. His best start at the track is fourth.
Carpenter finished the day in the 13th spot after putting in 105 laps behind the wheel of the No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone. Carpenter is looking for new success at Motegi as he has yet to finish a race on the 1.5-mile oval. His best result Moteg is is 16th while his best start at the track came from the 19th spot.
Foyt had a solid day of practice in the No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone completing 100 laps of practice and taking the 14th position on the speed charts. In three previous attempts at Motegi, driving for Foyt Enterprises, Foyt has a best start of 17th and best finish of 14th.
Brisk and cool spring time temperatures set the stage for the day of hot lap activity. Fortunately, while the skies threatened rain for much of the day, precipitation never interrupted practice. Improving weather is expected for practice, qualifying and the race over the next two days.
Practice for the Indy Japan 300 is set to resume tomorrow morning with qualifying taking place in the afternoon. The 300-lap, 200-mile race gets started on the 1.5-mile, egg-shaped oval of Twin Ring Motegi on Saturday afternoon, April 21st. The race will air at noon (EDT) on ESPN, IMS Radio Network, XM Satellite Radio channel 145 and on the web at www.IndyCar.com.
Tomas Scheckter - No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We were able to get quite a few good laps in today which was good. For sure, we'd like to be faster, but I think we are really in a pretty good spot right now. We've got a good racecar and we've identified some things that we can improve upon tomorrow so I'm looking forward to qualifying and the race."
Ed Carpenter - No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Practice was pretty good, but with the typical Japan weather it made things pretty chilly which I think got everyone off to a little bit of a slow start. Overall I am happy with how the day went. We have a pretty good racecar and hopefully we'll squeeze a little bit more speed out of it for qualifying tomorrow, but I think we are pretty happy with where we unloaded with the car. It's pretty promising for the rest of the weekend."
A.J. Foyt IV - No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Practice went alright. It's the first time that I have been here in a couple of years and it's my first time here with the team (Vision Racing) and I think we are right in the ballpark with a lot of good teams so I'm pretty happy with it. Of course you always want to be faster and higher up on the charts, but it was only our first day and we've still got two days to go so I'm feeling confident. The guys gave me a good, solid car to begin the weekend which always gets my confidence up quickly. So we'll get better over the next two days."
