Yasukawa unhurt in race day accident.
The inaugural Indy Japan 300 proved to be unlucky for several drivers including Roger Yasukawa, who was involved in an incident on Lap 46 of the 200-lap race. Yasukawa spun during the fourth restart of the day, collecting Helio Castroneves. Both drivers were unhurt.
Roger Yasukawa , Driver - #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"Today was really unfortunate for us. I think after the second yellow, there was debris from one of the Penske cars that flew over the left front wheel and it cut the tire and may have done something to the suspension. The car just didn't feel the same after that hit. For the restart, I wanted to push the car but it was very unstable. It was kind of hard to tell but I think it was a combination of turbulence and old tires. Maybe the damage on the car made it loose. I ended up spinning and then Helio [Castroneves] hit me and we both hit the wall. I really wanted to finish this race. I guess I will just have to wait until next year. We'll go on to the next one and hopefully do better in the Indy 500."
Tom Anderson , Managing Director:
"It was really an unfortunate ending today and not what we were planning for sure. These cars are very sensitive and when you have them setup very neutral, the tire pressures and all the other things change quite a bit especially when you are running under yellow. Even the experienced drivers, like in the last race in Phoenix, happen to spin under the same conditions. Roger was able to get away with it in Phoenix because the turn was a little bit slower and there wasn't anyone there to collide with. Unfortunately, when Roger spun today, we happened to get in the way of Helio Castroneves. I certainly hope he is okay. The collision took both to the wall and put both of them out for today. There's a little bit of damage on the car, but it is not tremendous. We will make our repairs and get them in Indy.
"I would like to especially thank Honda for all the effort this week. We had a great motor. I know we had a lot of horsepower, and Firestone had a great tire here. I was going to go for a fuel run [in the race], and we were pretty pleased with the machine balance that John Dick and Roger came up with here on race day. We were looking forward to running all day, but that's racing."
