Tomas Scheckter Qualifies 6th at Twin Ring Motegi
MOTEGI, Japan - Panther Racing driver Tomas Scheckter put his Chevrolet in the sixth spot during qualifications Friday for the Bridgestone Indy Japan 300. Scheckter's Chevrolet has started inside the top eight for every race this season - including winning the pole at Homestead - and this will be his third start in the top six.
Tomas posted his best lap of the weekend with a speed of 204.212 mph, 26.7957 seconds, which will put in on the outside of Row Three.
Tomas Enge was involved in an accident during his qualification run and was transported to Dokkyo University Hospital for a precautionary chest x-ray that was negative. Enge's #2 RockStar Chevy spun in the middle of Turns Three and Four and then struck the outside retaining wall in Turn Four. Enge has not been cleared to drive by the Indy Racing League Medical Staff and will start 23rd. He will be re-evaluated prior to the race to determine his status.
Scheckter was running strong last year at Motegi until a gearing problem forced the Pennzoil team to pull the car behind the wall for a gearbox change. Despite the setback Tomas still finished 13th in the race.
The Bridgestone Indy Japan will be broadcast on ESPN at noon (EST) on Saturday in the United States.
"We had a good solid run today in our Pennzoil racecar. The entire weekend we've just worked on our race setup, so it was nice to get our Chevrolet near the Top Five. At this track especially, having a good racecar is what's important, so that was our focus. I'm excited for the start of the race because I know that our car is going to be great tomorrow."
