SCHECKTER GRABS SECOND STRAIGHT TOP-FIVE FINISH WHILE CARPENTER TAKES SEVENTH FOR VISION RACING AT MICHIGAN
BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Vision Racing drivers, Tomas Scheckter and Ed Carpenter, took fifth and seventh in the rain-delayed Firestone Indy 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Consistency again was the hallmark for the team as Scheckter recorded his second top-five finish in a row and Carpenter finished in the seventh. This marks the team's seventh consecutive top-ten finish and the collective best finish.
Vision Racing also celebrated it's best start this weekend as Carpenter recorded his career-best qualifying position in fourth and Scheckter started eighth for the second straight race. Scheckter ran in the lead for the second week in a row and for the fourth time this season. He led four laps, giving him 1,351 leader laps in his career.
The back-to-back top-five finishes moves Scheckter up in the driver point standings from 11th to ninth. This breaks the team into the top-ten in points; it's highest standing-ever in the IndyCar Series.
Carpenter also ran a strong race, matching his career-best oval finish. He remains in the 15th spot in the driver point standings.
IndyCar Series Action gets underway again on Sunday, August 13th at the Kentucky Speedway for the Meijer Indy 300. Both Carpenter and Scheckter will try to avenge for the team's third top-five finish and eighth top-ten finish in a row when the green flag drops on the 200-lap/300-mile event. Coverage will air Sunday, Aug. 14, at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) on ABC Sports, IMS Radio Network, XM Satellite Radio channel 145 and on the web at www.IndyCar.com.
Race Results and Quotes (July 30, 2006):
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On race: "We had a good day, but the straight line speed wasn't there. These guys did a great job in making the car good in traffic and allowing me to get a top-five when maybe we weren't one of the five quickest cars. You can tell that we're really building some momentum as a team, which is always a good thing."
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On race: "It was a long race with a lot of green flag racing and the race cars were really good. We just didn't have the speed on our own when the field got spread out by all the green flag pit stops. We had a really good weekend as a team and I'm looking forward to building on this when we head to Kentucky."
