Greg Ray, the 1999 IRL IndyCar Series champion, led the Honda field Saturday in qualifying for this weekend's Michigan Indy 400, posting the seventh-fastest speed for his Access Motorsports team. The 36-year-old from Plano, Texas, also is an owner of the Indianapolis-based team, making Ray the only owner/driver currently in IRL competition.

Ray edged Team Rahal's Kenny Brack by just under six-thousandths of a second, as two Honda drivers make up the fourth row of the starting grid for Sunday's race.

Super Aguri Fernandez Racing's Roger Yasukawa is again the fastest rookie driver in the field, qualifying 12th. Fellow rookie Dan Wheldon led the three-car Andretti Green Racing effort in 13th, with teammates Bryan Herta and IRL IndyCar Series points leader Tony Kanaan just behind.

Greg Ray (#13 Trim Spa/Access Motorsports Honda) Qualified 7th:

"We actually ran a bit quicker in practice this morning, but we made our qualifying changes to the car expecting the weather to become sunny and warmer. So when it turned out to be cloudy and a bit cooler, we ended up missing the optimum chassis setup by just a hair. The car was good, but not quite perfect. Still, I've got to be pleased with our qualifying run, for a small team like ours I believe it shows that we are getting 'the most out of the least'. Tomorrow's race will be all about the draft, staying on the lead lap for the first 300 miles, then making a charge to the finish."
