Red Bull Cheever Racing driver Tomas Scheckter overcame a lengthy last pit stop by battling aggressively to regain the lead he had for most of today's Michigan Indy 400 - to take his first Indy Racing League victory. Standing beside his Dallara/Infiniti car, the talented rookie had strong praise for his Firestone Firehawks.
"The tires were unbelievable," Scheckter said. "I mean I really pushed the car flat out all the way around, using high lines and low lines, I could drive anywhere. Just unbelievable. I didn't care about conserving fuel. I didn't care about anything. I just cared that my right foot was flat."
Al Speyer, Executive Director Firestone Racing: "The long, big-oval races always provide a demanding test for the Firestone Firehawks. The tires have to be durable enough to handle the speeds and tremendous loads, but they have to be soft enough to give drivers just the right grip for the tire-to-tire racing we saw today. I'd say the Firehawks deserve an A-plus for their performance here. From start to finish - for 400 tough miles - the IRL drivers ran two and three abreast with amazing control. All of us with Firestone are proud to have contributed to such an impressive event in the IRL's first visit to MIS. We're also pleased to congratulate Tomas Scheckter and the Red Bull Cheever Racing team for their win today. It was a hard-fought victory, one we're sure everyone with the team will savor for some time. Tomas said his tires were flawless the entire race and that's the kind of comment you love to hear after a long, hard competition."
Firestone Performance Award: In addition to taking a home a first place trophy, Scheckter also earned a $10,000 bonus award from Firestone Racing for leading at lap 67. The Firestone Performance award celebrates Firestone being the only tire to appear in all 67 IRL events contested thus far.
