Taylor to Throw out First Pitch at Indians Game
Indianapolis, Ind. -- Panther Racing driver Mark Taylor will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Indianapolis Indians vs.. Durham Bulls game at Victory Field on Monday, May 24th, at 7 p.m. The Indy Racing League rookie qualified for his first Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, landing a spot in the middle of the fifth row, after running a four-lap average of 219.282 mph.
"I was never a huge baseball fan before I came to the United States, but after living here for two years, you almost can't help but enjoy the popular American sports," Taylor said. "I've really enjoyed watching some baseball the last few years, and I've found myself pretty caught up in the Indiana Pacers' playoff run as well. I've heard Victory Field is a beautiful place to watch a baseball game. Some of the guys on the team have been asking if I can throw a baseball, so I'll get Eric (Haverson) to make sure I don't embarrass myself out there."
Eric Haverson is Chief Mechanic on Taylor's Menards/Johns Manville Chevrolet, and played second base while attending high school in Laguna Beach, Calif. He's vowed to make sure his rookie driver doesn't make a fool of himself at Victory Field on Monday.
"I'll work with him some this week," Haverson said. "We can't have our guy go out there and look like he's never thrown a baseball before."
The Indianapolis Indians open an eight-day homestand this week with a 19-15 record. The Indians currently hold a one-game lead over the Columbus Clippers atop the Western Division of the International League. Indianapolis is the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, and play their home games at Victory Field, located in downtown Indianapolis at the corner of West and Maryland streets. Victory Field has been recognized as the "Best Minor League Ballpark in America" by Sports Illustrated and Baseball America.
Track activity at Indianapolis Motor Speedway resumes Wednesday, with practice from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. The Menards Pro Series' Freedom 100 is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Bump Day is Sunday, May 23rd, with qualifications held from noon until 6 p.m.
