IRL: Manning to miss Fontana race

After posting the fourth quickest time in qualifying yesterday, Darren Manning impacted the turn two wall and SAFER barrier at California Speedway, suffering a slight concussion and severe back contusion, according to Dr. Henry Bock, Indy Racing League medical director.

After being kept at Loma Linda Medical Center overnight for head, neck and chest x-rays and MRI, all of which were negative, Manning is forced to miss the Toyota Indy 400 race today on the 2-mile banked oval.

"I was pretty loose on the first lap," Manning explained from hospital. "On the second lap, I'm not sure what happened. Maybe a gust of wind, but I was very loose and the car came around on me. The rest is just a bit fuzzy," he said.

Manning is expected to return to Indianapolis on Monday and will be evaluated there prior to the Chevy 500K season finale on Texas Motor Speedway's 1.5-mile high banked oval October 17th.
