Mike Groff spun his car in turn three and backed it into the outside wall. The car hit hard with its left rear corner and slid along the outside wall for seventy feet before coming to rest against the wall.
Groff was taken to Dartmouth Hospital by helicopter. There was no report on his condition at press time. He was awake and alert when put in the helicopter. ---
Sam Schmidt celebrated his 33rd birthday today at NHIS. A birthday party was held for Sam in the hospitality area. Invited to the party were the children and families of High Hopes, a non-profit organization that grants wishes to seriously ill children of New Hampshire. KECO Motorsports of Indianapolis hosted the party.
--- Allan Pagan's race team practiced for Sunday's Pennzoil 200 today but the team owner was not at the track. Allan Pagan was due to arrive in New Hampshire until late this evening. A Pennzoil spokesman said that Mr. Pagan would be at the track on saturday morning. There was no further comment on the team.
Jim Guthrie is still "a little stiff" after his accident at Pike's Peak. Guthrie ran only 36 laps in friday's early session. Guthrie says that rooad racing experience will be beneficial at NHIS. "You have to use the brakes in turns one and three, but not in two or four. You have to go easy on the throttle, with a lot of braking, and you can't keep your foot flat."
Following saturday's on track activities, the garage area will be open to fans to get their favorite drivers autographs. Sharpie will sponsor the autograph sessoin which is scheduled to take place from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on saturday.
The Joie Chitwood Thrill Show is part of race day activities on Sunday. The Thrill show takes place after victory lane celebrations for the Pennzoil 200. Chitwood IRL driver Affonso Giaffone will be a passenger in a car driven on two wheels as part of the show.
