Las Vegas 500K - Friday Practice
The Indy Racing League conducted its final practice session for the Las Vegas 500K on Friday, with Arie Luyendyk leading the field with a fast speed of 201.237. Johnny Unser, who had a new motor put in his #9 Hemelgarn Racing car overnight, however, was only able to turn a handful of laps before a fuel pressure problem sidelined him for the rest of the evening.
"I was just getting up to speed out there and the car felt great, " said Unser. "We had a small problem with the fuel system and we were unable to get it repaired during practice. The new motor felt strong, though, and we're looking forward to a good race. With a 31 car field, there should be some close and competitive racing, and I think that it will be a great show for the fans here in Las Vegas."
It has been extremely windy here, and many drivers have commented on the effect that the wind has had on the handling of their cars. It is forecast to be clear and windy again for the race.
The festivities begin here in Las Vegas at 5:00pm Saturday evening, with the green flag scheduled for 7:00pm.The race will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday afternoon on ABC at 4:00pm EST.
