DARE' Gives TeamXtreme First Laps Lead

(ROCKWALL, TX), April 24, 2000 - Airton Dare' (Dar-ray) drove like a cham= pion in Saturday's Indy Racing Northern Light Series, Vegas 300 at Las Ve= gas Motor Speedway. Dare' qualified the #88 USACredit.com / freeinterne= t.com G-Force in 12th and finished 14th. It is what he did during the la= ps in between that has his crew and owners wearing a big grin. General M= anager, John Lopes recapped the race by saying, "this shouldn't be a surp= rise to anyone and it's certainly not to us. This is what we expect out = of a driver of Airton's caliber and more importantly it is what he expect= s from himself. He was a factor all day and it's a shame it ended with a= gearbox problem but we are proud of the race he ran and we're looking fo= rward to Indy." A disheartened Dare' sat on the back of his golf cart as= the last few laps dwindled down telling ABC commentator Jack Arute, "the= car was perfect, this is the best car I've ever had. I really feel bad = for the team." Arute acknowledged what his teammates already knew; "ther= e are brighter days ahead for this talented rookie." =

The race started unspectacularly with Dare' dropping back two positions t= o 14th and settling into the pace of the race for the first quarter of th= e laps. At lap 50 Dare' had worked his way into the top ten and was runn= ing in 6th. By the 70th lap the young Brazilian had made his way to third= and another ten laps on the board had him chasing the leader. A pit sto= p caught the team in the pits when a caution came out and Airton slid bac= k to sixth, a lap down before the race's halfway point. Airton then put= on a show for the fans, regaining his lap under green flag conditions. = In the next 18 laps Dare' was running third, 11.567 seconds behind the le= ader but over the next 20 laps Dare' moved into the lead and began to pul= l away from second place Scott Goodyear. Airton kept the USACredit.com /= freeinternet.com G-Force on the point for the next 12 laps before pittin= g for what would be the last stop of the race. "The X-Men" performed one= of their best pit stops of the year getting four tires and a full tank o= f fuel in ten seconds.
