Matsuura Learning in IndyCar Series Road Course Test
The IndyCar Series returned to action this week, today concluding a two-day Open Test at Homestead-Miami Speedway on the circuit's 2.21-mile road course. Kosuke Matsuura, returning for his third season with Super Aguri Fernandez Racing with a new Dallara/Honda/Firestone equipment combination, set the 13th quickest time of the outing in the #55 Panasonic ARTA. Matsuura, who was eighth-quickest overall amongst the 18 cars on opening day, turned a best lap of 1:11.9676 110.550 mph in the morning session.
Testing activities will resume on Sunday, with the team moving to the 1.5-mile at Homestead-Miami Speedway for one-day Open Test. The IndyCar Series 2006 season will open at the circuit on March 26.
Matsuura is preparing for his third season of IndyCar Series competition in 2006, and is reinvigorated and hungry for his first win after enduring a character-building season last year. He suffered eight DNF's (did not finish) in 17 starts, plagued by a series of misfortunes that resulted in a 14th-place ranking in the final standings. Despite the setbacks, Matsuura ended the season with seven top-10 finishes to his credit including a pair of sixth-place drives at Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen International.
Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"This was our first run on a road course with the Dallara chassis. We had a few problems at the beginning of the test with a clutch issue and gear problem as well, but we were able to fix these and the car was running fine. We were just working these two days to try to find a good setup and learn as much as we can. The biggest problem for us right now is the balance of the car. It was so difficult to drive today. We need to go and look over the data to see what we can learn."
