INDIANAPOLIS, January 18, 2001– Jim Freudenberg, general manager for Kelley Racing, announced today that Thomas Knapp has been named engineer for the #7 Kelley Racing entry for driver Greg Ray. This will be the fifth season that Knapp and Ray have joined forces while competing in the Indy Racing League where they have chalked up 4 wins and 10 poles.
“ The combination of Greg Ray and Thomas Knapp has proven to be successful time and again,” said Freudenberg.“ We’re excited they both have come on board with Kelley Racing.”
At the 1998 Indianapolis 500, Thomas Knapp Motorsports, then a low-budget team, put Greg Ray on the front row for only his second start in the prestigious event. He led 18 laps before gearbox problems ended his day.
The following season Team Menard hired Knapp and Ray where together they accumulated 3 wins and four poles towards the 1999 Indy Racing League Championship. While their combined efforts also won them the pole for the 2000 Indianapolis 500, a race day victory would complete their aspirations for the Brickyard.
“ Greg (Ray) and I have had some very frank conversations about where we are and what we need to do to accomplish Jim (Kelley) and Tom’s (Kelley) goals for the team, including the 2002 Championship,” said Knapp.“ Our history of working together spans quite a few years and having that to draw on will definitely expedite the team’s success.”
Kelley Racing will participate in the Test in the West on Feb. 6-9. The Indy Racing League preseason Media Day is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 5 at California Speedway.
