Sparta, KY (August 15, 2004) Red Bull Cheever Racing rookie Ed Carpenter powered through the 22-car field in the Belterra Casino Indy 300 to earn his best finish of the year.

The No. 52 Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone piloted by Carpenter started today's race in a modest 14th position, but with a combination of smart driving and good restarts crossed the finish line in a well-deserved 8th position.

"This was a great race for me," Carpenter said of his top-finishing Chevy. "I lost the draft at the start of the race and ended up near the back of the field, but I had two really good restarts that allowed me to move up. Those restarts really gave me a lot of confidence and once I was near the front I had a good enough car to hang on. It's great to see some good results for the team."

Teammate Alex Barron in his No. 51 Chevy-powered entry was the quickest car in the morning's final practice session, but struggled through the majority of the 200-lap race and couldn't find the speed to keep up with the lead pack.

"The car was smooth the whole race and we had some good pit stops," Barron said. "The test a few weeks ago at Michigan really paid off because we had the chance to analyze what we were doing with the chassis and we were able to make some solid improvements on the car. The guys worked hard the last few weeks and I think that was evident in how we ran today."

Next stop on the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series schedule is set for the challenging high-altitude track of Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado Springs, CO.

"Pikes Peak is a completely different track to run on because you're at such a high altitude," Barron explained. "It creates a lack of downforce and you can also lose a lot of horsepower. But, it's a good track for passing and you can run around in two grooves. Having not raced there last year, my most recent memories are from 2002 when it hailed, so I'm hoping we don't have that same problem again!"
