1999 Pep Boys Indy Racing League Championship MBNA Mid-Atlantic 200 Dover Downs International Speedway/Dover, Delaware Race Report - Sunday, August 1, 1999
On a day where the two best cars were driven by Kelley Racing drivers Mark Dismore and Scott Sharp, mechanical problems and bad luck took its toll. Sharp, driving the #8 Delphi Automotive Systems car, was leading comfortably when on lap 35, a mechanical failure ended the day for the American driver. Teammate and pole winner Mark Dismore, who led much of the remainder of the race, was involved in a racing incident with driver Stephan Gregoire on lap 189. Sharp and the Delphi team were hoping for a repeat on the "Monster Mile" track, while Mark Dismore and the MCI WorldCom team were looking for their first victory. The team will head back to Indianapolis for a few days, and then gear-up for tests in Colorado and Las Vegas.
#8 Scott Sharp, Delphi Automotive Systems/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear (Finished 22nd; Overall in Championship - 5th): "I am very disappointed. The car was running great. Mark and I were quite a way in front of the entire field. It's really a shame because the Delphi team worked hard all weekend long. We had the best car out there. I was hoping to finish well here. We have three races to go and we'll have to go after it."
#28 Mark Dismore, MCI WorldCom/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear (Finished 15th; Overall in Championship - 10th): "I had the best car out there today. I think both Scott and I had cars that were way beyond everyone else. We had the fastest lap of the race out there. This track is extremely hard to pass on. Unfortunately, going for the win, we got caught up in a race accident. The MCI WorldCom team took another step forward in trying to win a race. We look forward to going to Pikes Peak in three weeks."
Kelley Racing will take to the track again for Round Nine of the 1999 Pep Boys Indy Racing League Championship series at Pikes Peak International Raceway scheduled for August 25-27.
