Herta to start eleventh at Kansas.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (July 5, 2003) -- Bryan Herta will start 11th in tomorrow's Kansas Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway. Herta lapped the 1.5-mile oval in the #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone at 215.154 miles per hour.
Herta will be making his third Indy Racing League IndyCar Series start and will be looking for his second career top-five finish. In his first IndyCar Series start, the Californian finished fifth at Texas Motor Speedway. He was running well at Richmond one week ago, staying in the top-ten before late race contact with the wall moved him back to 14th.
Scott Dixon won his second straight MBNA Pole Award and his third this season. Dixon set the pole speed at 218.085 miles per hour. His Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Tomas Scheckter was the second quickest in today's qualifying, logging a best lap at 217.892 miles per hour. Tora Takagi will start third after his lap of 217.538 miles per hour. Herta's teammate Tony Kanaan will start eighth with speed of 215.585 miles per hour, while Dan Wheldon qualified 13th with a speed of 214..888 miles per hour.
The 200-lap Kansas Indy 300 will air live on ABC Sports at 1 p.m. EDT tomorrow.
Bryan Herta, #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We ran just about what we thought we would run because that is the time we did in practice. The Archipelago/Motorola car has a better race setup and it seems we just can't get it to go a fast as we need it to in qualifying. I know we have a good car for tomorrow."
Kyle Moyer, Team Manager, Archipelago/Motorola
"We were pretty good in race trim yesterday and we made a good long run. Circumstances are different in qualifying and they don't pay prize money on starting position, so as long as we're in the top-ten we'll be okay. As long as we are in the lead group in the race we should be fine."
