Chitwood to join IMS in senior management role.
INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 -- Joie Chitwood III will join the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a senior-level management position effective Oct. 1, Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Tony George announced Aug. 13.
Chitwood is the vice president and general manager of Raceway Associates LLC, which oversees operation of Chicagoland Speedway. Chitwood will continue his duties there through September.
Chitwood has been in his present position at Chicagoland since May 1999. During his tenure there, he oversaw the construction and inaugural season of the speedway and the operation of the Route 66 Raceway. Chitwood was one of the initial employees of the Indy Racing League before moving to Chicagoland.
"We are pleased to have Joie returning to the IMS family after a successful tenure with the Chicagoland Speedway," George said. "I know that our fellow investors in that facility have appreciated his contribution to the success of that operation. We look forward to Joie bringing his experience to bear in Indianapolis."
Said Chitwood: "I am honored to return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway family. I look forward to working with Tony George and his team and taking part in the many exciting developments at the Speedway. I have enjoyed working with Chicagoland Speedway and am very proud of what has been accomplished by the team."
Chitwood's entire career has included racing. As a member of the Chitwood Thrill Show, he began his career as a stuntman at age 5. Later he specialized in four-car precision driving and reverse spins, and his skills have been showcased on a variety of television shows, including ABC's "Wide World of Sports."
He is a 1992 graduate of the University of Florida with a business administration and finance degree. He also studied at Cambridge University in England and finished his formal education by earning his master's of business administration degree from the University of South Florida.
Chitwood and his wife, Susan, have one son, Joel. Joie Chitwood is active in community affairs in Joliet, including serving on the boards of directors of the Joliet Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Will County Center for Economic Development.
The duties and responsibilities to be assigned to Chitwood will be announced at a later date.
