Petty Enterprises announced that it has given permission to veteran driver John Andretti to pull double duty in May and seek a ride the 87th running of The Indianapolis 500.

Andretti, who cut his racing teeth in the open wheel ranks, was the first NASCAR competitor to attempt running both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 in one day. Tony Stewart, and Robbie Gordon have since made an eleven hundred mile test of endurance famous.

"This means a lot, it will be my last chance to compete against Michael". Notes the Indiana native, referring to his cousin Michael Andretti, who announced that he would retire after the Memorial Day classic.

Michael Andretti had not competed at Indianapolis since 1995 due to the infamous split between the Indy Racing league, and CART.

He returned to the yard of bricks last year with Team Green.

Indicating his plans to become a team owner he became financially involved with the team and moved the operation full time to the IRL.

The cousins, children of America's first family of open wheel racing, have raced against each other since early childhood and this year's 500 will mark the end of an era.

"We still argue about a go-cart race we had at Pocono when we were kids", said John, who clearly enjoys the family competition.

Andretti 's racing at Indianapolis has been a rich part of the cultural fabric at the famed brickyard.

Michael's retirement closes another chapter in American racing.

It is more than fitting that his cousin intends to share that moment with him: not just as a family member, but a competitor.
