Cheever Makes Run For Texas Pole, Ends Up Third
Fort Worth, Texas (June 7, 2001) -- Eddie Cheever Jr. made a serious run for the pole position in qualifying for the Casino Magic 500 on June 7, ending up third in the No. 51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti.
Circling the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway in 24.37 seconds, an average speed of 214.926 mph, Cheever sat on the pole briefly before being bumped off by Kelley Racing teammates Scott Sharp and Mark Dismore. The effort is the second time the all-new Infiniti Indy 35A engine has qualified in the top-three this season.
Driving the only other Infiniti engine in the field, Robbie Buhl qualified a strong eighth in the No. 24 Team Purex Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Infiniti with a 212.594 mph lap.
With rain causing the cancellation of the second practice session, Indy Racing Northern Light Series drivers qualified after only one 30-minute practice. Track activity continues tomorrow with Indy Racing practice from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. and 4:45 to 5:15 p.m.
The Casino Magic 500 will be televised live on ESPN at 8 p.m. (EDT) June 9. The "Indy Racing 2Day" pre-race show will broadcast at 6 p.m. ESPN2 will televise MBNA Pole qualifying at 12:30 a.m. (EDT) June 9. A live timing and scoring report for the race will be available on the Internet at www.indyracing.com.
Eddie Cheever Jr., No. 51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti: "We had a horrible month of May and I hope we've got that all through our system. We have improved the aerodynamics a lot since Atlanta and it has shown. We are happy. The Infiniti engine performed very well. We came here and focused on the aerodynamic detailing of the car and we have a little bit different engine than what we had in Atlanta."
Robbie Buhl, No. 24 Team Purex Dreyer & Reinbold Racing GForce-Infiniti: "We are happy with our car. In the half-hour session earlier today we were just taking it easy knowing we had more time to run. We really didn't change too much on the car. We just tried to make it better over the bump. We are going to focus on setting the car up for the race tomorrow. A lot of what we had today is just building on what we had last year. We went quicker from the June race to the October race last year with regards to our Infiniti engine and the car. I think we have done that again. The new Infiniti 35A is coming along, especially when you see where Eddie is running too."
