SPARTA, Ky. (Aug. 11, 2001) -- Infiniti drivers Eddie Cheever Jr. and Robbie Buhl qualified on the second row of the starting grid for the Belterra Casino Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway by turning the third and fourth fastest laps in qualifying. Cheever's third-place effort marks the fifth time this season that the Infiniti Indy 35A engine has qualified in the top three.

Cheever qualified third with a 213.200 mph lap in the No. 51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti, while Robbie Buhl qualified fourth with a 212.002 mph lap in the No. 24 Team Purex/Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Infiniti.

The Belterra Casino Indy 300 will be televised live on ABC at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) Sunday, Aug. 12, and "Indy Racing 2Day" will be televised at 11 a.m. (EDT) on ESPN2.

Eddie Cheever Jr., No. 51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti: "We made a mistake on the gearing this afternoon in qualifying. We keep hovering between a gear that is too short and a gear that is too long. The air is really thick. It's like driving through oatmeal out there, it's so heavy. I think it's adding a lot of drag to the car. Once we get the gearing right we'll be okay. It's a very long race. We're looking forward to tomorrow. Our team has done all of the development on this new engine and the Infiniti 35A has been particularly strong on these 1.5-mile ovals. I think it will come down to consistency. We've always worked on consistency and the Infiniti 35A is a very 'driveable' engine in traffic. I'm sure that heat will play a very important role too."

Robbie Buhl, No. 24 Team Purex Dreyer & Reinbold Racing GForce-Infiniti: "Team Purex has been quick everywhere since the month of May. We are very happy with the Infiniti power. Unfortunately, we just haven't had things go our way come race day, and we need to show that. We are happy to be starting up front. You have Kelley's guys on the front row, and I know Cheever's guys and myself would like to bump up a row. We'll keep working on that. Right now we've got to think about what it is we need to do on Sunday to be around at the end, and to be in contention to do something."
