INDIANAPOLIS, May 9, 2001 -- Kelley Racing is showing that they are a definite contender for this year's Indianapolis 500 by currently holding the top two speeds for the month.
Driver Mark Dismore had his #28 Delphi Automotive Systems/Bryant Heating & Cooling on top of the charts yesterday, but teammate Scott Sharp hit the fastest lap of the month at 226.137 mph just moments before the close of practice today.
"Obviously that lap is a great number, but it's probably not too realistic," said Sharp. "I got a great tow from Airton Dare about the whole lap around. I went out on new tires and didn't have a lot of fuel in the car. I just couldn't get a couple of laps with a window. I kept running in traffic and had to back off. I finally got a little bit of a run going and caught up to Airton (Dare) fairly quickly. At that point I was probably going to have to pit if I didn't keep the hammer down. He carried me all the way around to the start/finish line. It was a pretty awesome draft."
While Sharp was working on qualifying setup for his #8 Delphi Automotive Systems car, Dismore's Delphi/Bryant crew was checking out different things for race setup. Dismore's top speed for today was 221.515 mph, which he posted earlier this afternoon.
The team will take tomorrow off and return on Fast Friday to make their final preparations for Pole Day this Saturday.
