VISION RACING QUARTET RESUMES PRACTICE, SIMULATES RACE CONDITIONS
SPEEDWAY, Indiana -- The second week of IndyCar Series practice resumed today under cool conditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500. Vision Racing wasted no time getting back to work as all four drivers ran numerous laps on the 2.5-mile oval, much of which were ran in-tandem to simulate race-like conditions.
With all four entries qualified for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, the team is now able to focus on establishing the optimum race set up for each driver and car. Team driver Tomas Scheckter did just that as he got the No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone, up to 10th quick on the day with a best lap over 219 mph. His 79 laps were the third most amongst his teammates.
Completing 59 laps in the No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools special today, Ed Carpenter finished just behind Scheckter in 11th on the speed chart. In spite of feeling a bit under the weather today, Carpenter still felt good inside the cockpit and praised the team on what turned out to be a very productive afternoon.
A.J. Foyt IV not only ran the most laps of anyone on the team, but the most laps of any of the 27 cars on track today as he turned more than 262 miles in 105 laps. Vision Racing's No. 22 machine was 14th fastest on the day with Foyt running his quickest at just over 217 mph.
The No. 02 HP Vision Racing machine was quick enough to take the 16th spot, with Davey Hamilton behind the wheel. Hamilton completed 86 laps and ran a quick lap of more than 216 mph.
The Vision Racing foursome will be on track again tomorrow when scheduled practice time for Thursday, May 17, begins at noon (ET) and lasts until six p.m. The team will again be working on race setups in preparation for the race day, May 27.
91st Running of the Indianapolis 500 Practice Results (May 16, 2007) and
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We had a good day today. The team worked on a lot of different things today and we were able to go out there and work with the other three team drivers and test our race setup. We will just keep working on the car at this point to get it ready for the race, so we'll be back out again tomorrow trying to get in as many laps as we can."
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Hitachi Power Tools Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It was kind of long day because I kind of came down with the flu or something last night. So I wasn't even sure if I was going to get in the car this morning, but once you get out here and get in the car, everything feels good again. I would say we had a really good start towards our race prep. It was a productive day. In fact, it was probably one of our most productive days we've had yet. We are just learning more things about the Hitachi Power Tools car the more we run so I'm just looking forward to feeling better so we can get out there tomorrow and run even more laps."
A.J. Foyt IV -- No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We didn't have as much speed as we wanted to, at least compared to the No. 2 car and the No. 20 car, but I think we were able to learn some things that they did that seemed to work. So we'll try to do the same for our car, and tomorrow we'll put that package on to run and hopefully things will be a little bit better."
Davey Hamilton -- No. 02 HP Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It was a good day out there today. We have a really great racecar and I ran almost half the race distance out there today, so I felt comfortable in the car and we learned a lot. We rean a lot with the rest of the team out there to see how the car would react and I felt like things went really well. I could pass guys, drive much of the track and really work the car, so it was good. We'll just keep trying different things throughout the week and prepare the HP car for race day."
