Rookies ready for ROP; Herbert attempting unique double.

INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday, April 11, 2002 - Six Indianapolis 500 rookies are expected to participate in the Indianapolis 500 Rookie Orientation Program on April 11-13 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Participants include John de Vries (Brayton Racing), Anthony Lazzaro (Sam Schmidt Motorsports), George Mack (310 Racing), Laurent Redon (Mi Jack Conquest Racing), Tomas Scheckter (Red Bull Cheever Racing) and Rick Treadway (Treadway and Associates Racing). There are 11 rookies named to entries for the 86th Indianapolis 500 on May 26, but five of those drivers have significant high-speed experience and veteran status in other series or formulas and are not required to participate in the rookie program.

ROP started April 11 with classroom instruction led by Brian Barnhart, Indy Racing League vice president of operations. Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford, driving coaches for the Indy Racing League, also are instructing the drivers.

The rookies take to the historic 2.5-mile oval April 12-13 to participate in the on-track portion of the program. Drivers must complete at least 10 consecutive laps at four speed phases, showing control of the car, under the eye of Barnhart, Unser, Rutherford and other veteran observers, to complete the program and become eligible to participate in the event, which opens May 5. The phases:

*Phase 1: 195-200 mph
*Phase 2: 200-205 mph
*Phase 3: 205-210 mph
*Phase 4: More than 210 mph
