Meira Makes Official Indianapolis Debut with New Team

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Panther Racing and new driver Vitor Meira made their debut together Tuesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the track was open for all competitors for the first time this month. Meira, who entered the day eighth in the IndyCar Series Championship, turned a total of 64 laps during the rain-shortened practice session. The team is making preparations for Saturday's Pole Day qualifications, where the first 11 spots in the 90th Indianapolis 500 will be up for grabs.

Pole Day was rained out last season, and fans were unable to experience the new qualification format at Indianapolis. Panther, who had three cars in the '500' last year, qualified each inside the top eleven, and was the only team to do so in 2005. With another three full practice days ahead, the team looks to sharpen its qualifying setup and get Meira in the show by the end of the day Saturday.

Meira Quote

"It was a good day today for myself and everybody on the Panther team. I would say this is the second full day of practice that we've had on an oval all season. We took it easy most of the day. Everything that we tried, and all the changes that we made, were baby steps. We could have been much more aggressive, which is an important thing that we learned today. I'm very happy with our progress."
