Panoz G Force Drivers Hog Carburetion Day Final Indy Practice
INDIANAPOLIS, May 27, 2004 Drivers whose teams chose the Panoz G Force chassis for their Indy Racing League IndyCar Series campaigns and for the 88th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race are already seeing results without a single lap turned in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. Relying on the only US-designed and US-built chassis in major North American open wheel competition, Panoz G Force competitors notched the five fastest laps in the final tune-up for the 200-lap enduro Sunday.
Rookie Kosuke Matsuura, a regular at the top of the time sheets the past week was quickest at 219.226mph in his #55 Panasonic/ARTA Panoz G Force/Honda and called his 17 laps "a very, very good test. The car is very fast and, for drafting the car has a very good balance." Teammate and team co-owner Adrian Fernandez was second in the #5 Quaker State/Telmex Panoz G Force/Honda t 218.066mph, using only five laps (of 11) to achieve that mark. "We basically did just a few laps, making sure that we did what we have been doing all month. The cars are good and that's it," Fernandez declared.
2003 IndyCar Series champ Scott Dixon, third today at 217.391mph in the #1 Target Panoz G Force/Toyota said he "pretty much sorted the car last week. We're prepared as well as we could be. We've done what we needed to do." Teammates Vitor Meira (#17 Team CENTRIX Panoz G Force/Honda) and Roger Yasukawa (#16 Sammy Panoz G Force/Honda) rounded out the top five. Meira said, "The car feels better than I expected. I've always heard the month of May is like a puzzle and that you want to put all the pieces together on Carb Day. Today we have done that." Yasukawa is "very pleased with the setup. The car is solid and I'm very confident."
Polesitter Buddy Rice in the #15 Argent Mortgage/Pioneer Panoz G Force/Honda simply "did all of our leak checks and ran a few laps in practice. I think our car will be able to run at the front all day with this setup," he noted after practicing 11th. "I know it's a long day and conditions will change. Overall I'm pleased with our car." He expects a "very strategic race."
The 88th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race is set to take the green flags this Sunday, May 30th just after noon EDT. In the United States, it will be shown live on ABC-TV.
