Weather: A break in the persistent rain came at 9:00 am, and track drying began. At 1:20 pm, the start of the first Group 1 practice session, temperatures were at 52º F under overcast skies peppered by threatening clouds. At 2:30 pm, heavy rain interrupts the second practice session for Group 2. At 3:00 pm, heavy rain with temperatures at 54º F and variable winds at 4 mph.

Practice Summary: Teams took to the track at 12:30 pm for a schedule that was to include two 35-minute sessions split according to the qualifying draw, followed by a 30-minute break and the start of qualifying. Intermittent rain delayed the 12:30 pm start and Matsuura, who was in Group 1, took to the track at 1:20 pm. Reports of moisture in various areas of the track contributed to a stop-and-start session. Matsuura completed 20 laps before the end of the session at approximately 2:00 pm. The team continued to trim out the car for qualifying throughout the session, but Matsuura was unable to complete his last qualifying run simulation as time ran out in the session. All track activity for the day was suspended at 3:30 pm due to rain.

Qualifying for positions 1-33 will take place next Saturday, May 20th . Sunday, May 21st will be reserved for Bump Day. Practice activities are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic ARTA Dallara/Honda/Firestone:

"For the start of the session, we trimmed out a lot on the car for qualifying. The car had a little bit of push. We made some changes, and the car was getting better and better. At the end, in the last two to three minutes, we took off everything and -- although I wasn't able to make a complete lap because of the checkered flag -- through Turns One, Two and the back straight, the car felt a lot different. We gained a lot of speed from our previous outing. I think I will be able to make over 225 mph in qualifying easy. Hopefully, the weather will let us get some more practice time in this week before qualifying next Saturday. We want to have a perfect day in front of a lot of fans for qualifying and maybe that will happen next weekend. I want to be able to show 100% of my performance."
