Kelley Racing completes first Indianapolis test of 2003.
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (April 23, 2003)-- All three Kelley Racing drivers entered for the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500 participated in a variety of testing held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week in preparation for opening day on May 4.
Rookie Tony Renna, driver of the No. 32 CAN/HomeMed Pharmacy entry, was the first of the Kelley drivers on the track this week for his Rookie Orientation Program (ROP) on Monday. "It was very rewarding to complete my ROP, " said Renna. "Competing in the Indianapolis 500 has been a dream for me in my racing career and to actually run here for the first time is pretty awesome." Renna completed his ROP late Monday afternoon and then continued testing on Tuesday, running 120 total laps on the historic 2.5-mile oval with a top speed of 223.93 mph.
Indy Racing League IndyCar Series points leader and Kelley Racing driver Scott Sharp, driver of the No. 8 Delphi entry, also tested Tuesday and Wednesday at IMS. Sharp was happy with the inaugural outing of the 2003 season at the Speedway. "I'm very pleased with the Kelley Racing/Delphi group," said Sharp. "We unloaded and ran very well yesterday and today. The 2003 Dallara chassis and Toyota engines have been great and the team has been doing a great job as well. It seems like we're right were we need to be to start the month of May." Sharp turned a total of 92 laps during his two-day test with a top speed of 226.2 mph.
Al Unser Jr., driver of the No. 31 Corteco entry, joined his teammate Scott Sharp today for a day of testing as well. "Both Scott and I are pretty happy with our cars and feel like we're running pretty competitive times," said Unser Jr. "The Corteco team worked extremely hard at this test and it showed. I am looking forward to opening day and a great month of May at the Speedway with Kelley Racing." Unser Jr. turned a total of 76 laps today with a top speed of 225.56 mph.
The testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is in preparation for the 87th Indianapolis 500 that will be held on Sunday, May 25. The race will be broadcast on ABC and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network.
