Indianapolis 500---Pole Day
Saturday, May 15, 2004
Scott Sharp No. 8 Delphi/Dallara/Toyota/Firestone
"We're surprised, we were wide open all the way this morning and decided to take some wing out of the car. Everyone's sort of scratching their heads. Finishing, coming up the back straight away on my third lap I got on the radio and said that it didn't seem like we were carrying speed in the back straight-away. But coming into this month we knew that we probably wouldn't have the speed for the first three rows based off of our first three races. Where we were going to qualify was not going to change overnight. We have really chosen to work hard on the race car. Each day we've gone out with a lot of fuel in the car and higher downforce and tried to get behind other drivers to work in traffic . After the first pit stop people don't remember who qualified where so let's go race."
Speed: 215.635 mph
Sarah Fisher. No. 39 Bryant/CAN/Dallara/Toyota/Firestone
"Pole day is great and everyone wants to win but it's all about putting the best racecar on the track and doing the best we can on May 30th. I think we've had a great effort with the Bryant/CAN for the laps we got in this week. Now we're focused on the race car and we'll have a great car at the end of the month. The biggest obstacle was getting on the track. Having the first race coming back be the Indianapolis 500 is difficult for anybody. We wanted to have a slow progression and get faster and faster and we were able to do that."
Speed: 215.771 mph
* Sharp qualified today for his tenth Indianapolis 500. His best qualifying effort at Indianapolis was in 2001 when he started from the pole position.
* Fisher qualified today for her fifth Indianapolis 500.
