May 26, 1998 - Johnny Unser Racing 1998 Indy Wrap-Up
Johnny Unser competed in his third Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, moving up through the field and running a very strong race before dropping out at the midpoint with engine problems.
Johnny's day began from the back of the field and the 25th starting position. After taking the green flag, he was able to avoid the first lap accident just in front of him, and make it through the wreckage unscathed. As the race progressed, he began to work his way up through the field.
"We didn't run too well on our first set of tires", said Johnny, "so we were having a lot of handling problems at first. We made some adjustments during the first pit stop, which really helped out a lot and from then on, we were able to start working our way forward. The race started to go our way, and we made it up well into the top 10, just behind the leaders. Our race plan was to stay up there towards the front, and conserve the car for the end of the race. Unfortunately, on lap 98, the engine let go and we were out of the race."
Johnny finished his third race in 25th position, having completed 98 laps. His strong showing during the race impressed many people, however, and he is looking forward to racing in additional IRL events later this year.
"I really want to thank Hemelgarn Racing, Homier Tools and all of my sponsors for their support this month" said Johnny. "It's great to be here with a proven race team, and I'm looking forward to coming back next year and doing it again."
There was another Unser in this year's race. Johnny's cousin Robby Unser, son of 3-time winner Bobby Unser, finished 5th in his first Indy 500. Robby, who was driving for Team Cheever in his first ever IRL event, made a remarkable showing in a car which lost the rear brakes early in the race. Robby was able to keep the car consistently in the top ten all day, running as high as 3rd before finishing in 5th, the second highest finishing rookie of the race. We congratulate Robby and Team Cheever on a great race weekend.
We will have more updates on what's next for Johnny as the season progresses. For now, however, please stop by our website, look around, and check out the new Unser Racing Gear. You won't be disappointed!
Thank you again for all of your support.
