Miller Lite crew qualifies for Pit Crew Contest.

SPEEDWAY, IN . . . Having already qualified the Miller Lite car for the 86th running of the Indianapolis 500, Jimmy Vasser and the rest of the Miller Lite team turned their focus to perfecting the race set-up on the team's Dallara/Chevrolet. Vasser returned to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time since qualifying the Miller Lite car last Saturday and logged 105 laps on the famed 2.5-mile oval. The 105 laps marked the busiest day of the month for the Miller Lite team.

Vasser collected the ninth fastest lap of the day and while the team was conscious of the speed the primary focus was preparing the car for the grueling 500-mile challenge of the world's most famous race.

Prior to practice the Miller Lite pit crew qualified for the 2002 Indy 500 Pit Crew contest which will be held on Carb Day (May 23rd). The contest pits 12 pit crews against each other with the winning pit crew taking home over $40,000.

The Rahal/Letterman Racing Miller Lite crew had to capture one of two at-large spots in the 12 team tournament. Six of the 12 spots are reserved for the top finishers from the 2001 contest, three spots are reserved for the top three teams in the 2002 IRL pit crew competition and one spot is reserved for the 2002 Indy 500 pole winning pit crew. The final two spots were filled by the teams posting the fastest times during the preliminary round. The Miller Lite crew posted a pit stop of 10.2 seconds which was second best in the qualifying round.

Practice will resume on Thursday for the May 26th Indy 500.

Jimmy Vasser (#19 Miller Lite- Dallara/Chevrolet on Firestone tires) -"Today was a good day for us. We ran at Mid-Ohio yesterday (Tuesday) and came back here for a race test. We concentrated on full fuel tank runs and the car still feels solid just like last week. I have thought we had a good race car from the start and so far that is still the case. We ran more laps today than we have run in any day this month. Now, we are going to experiment with some other settings with the car. We have to be able to run close to cars so we can make a run at them off the corner. We'll continue to scrub in tires too. The weather is still questionable for the next few days, so we need to get in a lot of running right now. But we have learned quite bit so far and we'll continue to prepare for next week. It was good for the whole Miller Lite team to get into the Pit Stop Challenge for next week. That is something that shows off the crew and they are our 'hidden heroes.' You definitely can win or lose a race with your pit crew and this team is very good in the pits."
