SPEEDWAY, IN . . . High winds and cool temperatures hampered the race preparations of Rahal/Letterman Racing driver Jimmy Vasser and his Miller Lite team during Friday practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Practice was limited by several rain delays as only a handful of cars took to the famed 2.5-mile oval. The majority of the drivers who took to the track were cars that have not qualified for the race.

Vasser logged just 22 laps Friday and the Miller Lite crew decided to change the Chevrolet engine for Saturday's practice. Vasser posted his fast lap of 223.002 miles per hour in the windy conditions and sat out the remainder of the day. Vasser, who qualified for his seventh Indy 500 last Saturday at 227.743 mph, will start 19th in the 86th running of the May classic.

Robbie Buhl was the fastest driver of the day Friday at 228.077 mph followed by A.J. Foyt's driver Airton Dare.

Practice will resume on Saturday for the May 26th Indy 500.

Jimmy Vasser (#19 Miller Lite- Dallara/Chevrolet on Firestone tires) -"We knew the cold weather would be a factor for everyone. We didn't make many laps (22) and we were going to change an engine anyway. So it was easier to park the car and run on Saturday. With the wind and the low track temperature, it doesn't make sense to go out in these conditions. We have some time on Saturday to check our setups and scrub in more tires. The crew is working hard right now to prepare the race car for May 26."
