Weather Washes Out "Fast Friday" at Indy

Rain and persistent cold temperatures at Indianapolis Motor Speedway forced race officials to cancel "Fast Friday", traditionally the final day of practice prior to Pole Day qualifying for the Indianapolis 500. Rain fell on-and-off throughout the day, with practice officially cancelled just after 2 p.m. EDT. Weather permitting, activities will resume Saturday with short practice, followed by qualifying from 12-6 p.m. EDT.

A total of 27 drivers have turned 2,950 laps in practice this week, for a total of 7,375 miles, in preparation for the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500, the first with Honda as sole engine supplier for the Memorial Day classic, a field that includes six former "500" race winners and four rookies looking for their first race start at Indy. Sam Hornish Jr. and defending race winner Dan Wheldon led the field in practice this week, both turning laps in excess of 226 mph.

Roger Griffiths (Race Team Technical Leader, Honda Performance Development) on practice today: "We haven't had any mechanical issues at all this week, with almost 7,400 miles logged for the Honda Indy V-8 engines. Everything is going very much to plan, so we're quite pleased. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this weekend and we'll get our first 22 qualifiers for the '500'."
