Rain Washes Out First Day Qualifying at Indianapolis

Frequent showers and forecasts for more rain throughout the day forced Indy Racing League officials to postpone Saturday's planned Pole Day qualifying activities at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

After three days of high speeds during practice in near-perfect weather conditions, rain moved into the Indianapolis area on Friday afternoon, curtailing the final day of opening-week practice. The rain continued on and off throughout the night, leading IRL officials to cancel all track activities shortly after noon local time.

In the qualifying draw held Friday afternoon, Honda-powered Scott Sharp drew the first position. Sharp qualified on the pole here in 2001. Of the 14 Honda-powered drivers entered at this year's "500" only Buddy Rice will not be eligible to make a qualifying attempt on Sunday, as he has yet to receive medical clearance to resume driving following a crash in Turn Two on Wednesday.

Weather permitting, qualifying will start Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT with the coveted pole position and first 22 positions in the 33-car starting field up for grabs.
