Indianapolis, IN: Rookie Felipe Giaffone breezed through his Indianapolis Motor Speedway rookie test today in his #21 Hollywood/G-Force/Oldsmobile/Firestone entry for Treadway-Hubbard Racing. Giaffone passed the 40-lap requirement in just 55 laps during the first day of the mandatory rookie orientation at the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
"I'm just starting to enjoy the day now that I completed the rookie test," said Giaffone. "It's not easy to complete the rookie test here. This track is different than any other I have been on. The straightaways are really long. Each corner is different and as you change your line it affects each corner differently. Every lap here you learn something new. I don't think you can ever get enough laps here."
Two-time INDY 500 winner Arie Luyendyk was on hand to help coach Giaffone. "Felipe is a quick learner," said Luyendyk. "He did really well for his first time to the speedway. I think he'll do just fine. I know we'll have good cars here in May with the Treadway-Hubbard team. I gave him a few tips, but I didn't tell him everything, yet."
"It was very helpful to have Arie here," said Giaffone. "He gave me two tips that really made the difference in how I approached the track. I'm really happy to have him as a teammate for the INDY 500 this year."
Giaffone ran a total of 116 laps reaching a top speed in 216.73 MPH. Giaffone will continue testing tomorrow at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The team will continue testing Monday and Tuesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Arie Luyendyk making his return to the Brickyard.
Giaffone is currently third in the INDY Racing Northern Light Series season points championship and is leading the rookie of the year points standings after 2 of the 13 IRL races in 2001.
