Those who expect dramatic finishes at the Indianapolis 500 were not disappointed in today's event as Marlboro Team Penske driver Helio Castroneves collected his second win at the Brickyard running on fumes. His victory was also the 12th for team owner Roger Penske and the 53rd for the Firestone Racing program.
As Team KOOL Green driver Paul Tracy and Castroneves were battling for the lead with less than three laps left, an accident forced a yellow, allowing Castroneves to squeeze a few more miles out of his nearly empty fuel tank. No one was more jubilant about the win than team owner Roger Penske.
"The Firestones were fantastic all day," Penske said. "We ran more than 40 laps on the last set with no problems. We had fantastic wear, and even with the tougher surface the tires held up the way they should; they were just terrific. We ran sticker tires throughout the day (tires that had not been scuffed in practice) and they came in perfectly every time.
Quote from Firestone Racing Executive Director Al Speyer: "We congratulate Roger, Helio and everyone with Marlboro Team Penske on the great race strategy and superb driving. With the new track surface, we were watching tire wear closely, but after the first pit sop it was obvious wear would not be a problem. We put a lot of emphasis on quality control and consistency, and it certainly paid off in today's race. Our entire team worked very hard to make sure the drivers had the best tire usage recommendations and that the teams had quick and efficient service in getting many sets of tires mounted and balanced. But there's no time to rest in this business; in the next few weeks we will begin developing and testing the Fireahawk race tires for next year's 87th running of the Indianapolis 500."
Quote from Helio Castroneves, Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone: "I have to thank everybody at Firestone for this win. It's a credit for Firestone because I had never any problems and I was able to go extra long on the last set for the win."
Temperatures during the race ranged from 103 to 121 degrees track and from 75 to 80 degrees ambient (F).
