Red Bull Cheever ready for Pole Day at Indy.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 9, 2003) -- After six days and a 1000 miles of practice this month, Red Bull Cheever Racing and Buddy Rice are ready for Pole Day for the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500.
In the final day of practice before the run for the pole position, Rice topped out at 39.8461 seconds, 225.8690 mph.
"Now, we have to be ready to go for qualifying we don't have a choice," Rice said. "We got some things done that will help us for tomorrow. This morning was pretty rough. It was windy and the track was slick. The humidity and heat weren't very good. By midday everybody started running their numbers and showing what they could do. We'll just have to wait and see."
"We have had a very diligent week," team owner Eddie Cheever Jr. added. "We have been consistently competitive with the equipment we have. I believe we will get the best out of the Red Bull car that we can tomorrow. We have a lot of work to do with General Motors, which I am sure we will get done. I am very proud of the team. Once we get into the race we will do okay."
Cheever has been on hand all week, watching and advising from the pit lane on Rice's first Indianapolis 500.
"Buddy has been excellent," Cheever said. "Like a pro. He has had some difficult beginnings this year on other circuits. Here at Indy he has done better than he will be publicly acknowledged because of our cars."
In the qualifying draw following practice, Cheever pulled 15th for the No. 52T car and 25th for the No. 52 car.
"I like to get qualifying out of the way," Cheever said. "It is a very pressure-filled situation. The minute you qualify you forget about it and start thinking about how you are going to run your best 500 miles."
Pole qualifying for the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 10, with the race set for May 25. The race will be televised live on ABC and by the Indy Racing Radio Network. Live timing and scoring of all on-track activity can be found on www.indyracing.com.
