Andretti puts Team 7-Eleven machine through race pace on Monday
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 5, 2003) -- Michael Andretti and his Team 7-Eleven teammates took advantage of unexpected clear skies and warm temperatures on Monday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to log a session-high 82 laps of race practice in preparation for the 87th running the Indianapolis 500.
According the team manager Tony Cotman, the team made three primary runs during the day, paying particular attention to track temperature each stint. Andretti's top speed during the course of the day was 223.025 miles per hour, which is a 40.3542- second lap around the famed 2.5-mile oval.
Rookie driver Tora Takagi posted the fastest speed of the day during the final hour of practice, topping the speed charts at 229.019 miles per hour (39.2980 seconds). Scott Sharp was second fastest Monday at 228.766 miles per hour (39.3415 seconds), while Scott Dixon ranked third at 228.427 miles per hour (39.3999). Gil de Ferran was fourth at 228.417 miles per hour (39.4016 seconds), followed by Andretti's rookie teammate Dan Wheldon, who clocked in at 228.233 miles per hour (39.4334 seconds). Another of Andretti's teammates -- Robby Gordon -- clocked in seventh at 227.735 miles per hour.
Practice continues tomorrow at Indianapolis in preparation for Saturday's "pole day" qualifying session. The Indy 500 is slated to go green at 12 p.m. EDT and will be aired live on ABC Sports.
MICHAEL ANDRETTI , #7 TEAM 7-ELEVEN DALLARA/HONDA/FIRESTONE:
"We did a lot of race setup today and let the other guys do more of the qualifying stuff. It was pretty good. It was a pretty useful day.
"The car was pretty comfortable. It wasn't bad. It's early, yet, but we're pretty happy with it so far."
TONY COTMAN , TEAM MANAGER, TEAM 7-ELEVEN:
"We spent the whole day on race simulation. We pretty much made three basic outings today, each time a little bit different. We were just really monitoring the track temperature versus the setup we had on the car at that time. We obtained a lot of useful data for down the road. We'll do a little more on it in days to come, maybe a little more after qualifying.
"It went really well. We're really happy. We probably ran half a race distance today, so it was pretty good. It was efficient work."
