Skip Barber trained Sam Hornish Jr. was the quickest of all Indy Racing League testers at Gateway Tuesday, lapping at a top speed of 169.152mph (26.6033sec) in the Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Aurora. The series points leader tripped his best circuit 0.168 sec. faster than his closest competitor.

"It makes us happy because we know that we have a pretty competitive car right now, and we are fast," Hornish said. "It is better than being slowest. It does give us quite a bit more confidence. To know that you are going to be able to be fast and probably run up front gives us a lot of confidence."

The Indy Racing League opened the doors of Gateway International Raceway Tuesday to give its competitors a chance to get a handle on the St. Louis oval in advance of their inaugural event, but the field failed to gain anything on the guy they have been chasing all year.

The series will head to Gateway for its first-ever event on the Illinois oval on August 26.
