IndyCar 'Road Test' Wraps Up at Homestead

Honda-powered IndyCar Series drivers and teams wrapped up two days of pre-season road course testing Friday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, part of final preparations prior to the start of the 2006 IndyCar Series later this month.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves paced the 18-car field with a best-lap average of 112.308 mph for the Marlboro Team Penske organization. Castroneves was quickest both days of the test, leading Thursday with a speed of 112.033 mph. Marco Andretti was the quickest rookie, running 12th overall with an average speed of 110.570 mph.

After a day spent in the garage area converting to oval-racing specification, the IndyCars will have one additional test day here on Sunday, running the 1.5-mile oval track at Homestead, where the season will open on March 26.

Helio Castroneves (#3 Marlboro Team Penske Honda) quickest at the road course test: "It was an awesome day, awesome days actually. Both days, everything seemed to be going in our direction. Sam [Hornish Jr.] and I were working well together; the whole team was working very well. Honda and the IRL have eliminated traction control this year, and that helps equalize the field, I think. Nothing comes easy, and we have to keep working hard, but I think we're all going in the right direction."
