Dan Wheldon Quickest in Final Pre-Season Test

Pre-season testing for the 2007 IndyCar Series concluded Thursday with the second of two night practice sessions at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida, as 19 drivers and teams completed preparations for next month's season-opening race here and the first of five Saturday night races this season.

This marks the second year for Honda to serve as the engine supplier for the entire IndyCar field, and the first using 100% fuel-grade ethanol in the Honda HI7R Indy V-8 engine, which features increased displacement (from 3.0 to 3.5 liters), providing significantly increased torque and mid-range power to meet the demands of the additional road courses on the 2007 schedule. Drivers recorded 4,675 laps in two nights at Homestead, for a total of 7,012.5 miles without a single Honda engine failure.

Former series and Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon laid down the best time of the test on Wednesday night, with a 214.858 mph average around the banked 1.5-mile oval, despite damaging his primary car later that evening with a crash in Turn Two. Switching to a backup machine for the final night on Thursday, Wheldon remained the quickest with a speed of 214.350 mph.

Wheldon was followed by defending series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Sam Hornish Jr., in second, while 2004 title winner Tony Kanaan rounded out the top three. The 2007 season gets underway at Homestead on Saturday night, March 24. Just seven-tenths of a second covered the entire field.

Dan Wheldon (#10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) quickest in testing at Homestead: "It's unfortunate that I crashed on the first night, as that car was really quick and well-balanced. But my guys also prepared a great back-up car, and I think we've demonstrated the depth of this team by staying at the front with our spare car tonight. It's been a long off-season, and I'm ready to start the '07 season right now. I wish we were racing this weekend!"
