Herta, Franchitti lead Honda test runs.

Honda drivers led the field for three of four timed sessions, and claimed four of the top six positions overall as two days of Indy Racing League IndyCar Series pre-season open testing concluded Thursday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Andretti Green Racing's Dan Wheldon posted the quick time on the first day of testing, and finished second fastest on the combined time sheets, while teammates Bryan Herta, Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan finished the test in the fourth through sixth positions.

In addition, Kanaan led the field following Wednesday morning's first timed session, while Franchitti posted the fastest speed around the 1.5-mile Homestead oval in Thursday morning's session. After losing a significant amount of time in the garage area with mechanical problems on Wednesday, Buddy Rice in the Team Rahal Honda moved up to 15th overall today, with rookie Japanese driver Kosuke Matsuura listed 18th for Super Aguri Fernandez Racing.

This is the first of a pair of two-day official tests sanctioned by the IRL prior to the start of the IndyCar Series season. The second test is scheduled at Phoenix International Raceway, February 11-12.

Dan Wheldon (#26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Andretti Green Racing Honda) Fastest on Wednesday, 2nd overall: "The test went really well. The crew has done a great job and I've been fast in every session. Andretti Green Racing has also done a great job in producing four very competitive cars that are very equal. We just worked through a set program which is going very well and the main thing is we are preparing for qualifying and the race here."

Dario Franchitti (#27 ArcaEx Andretti Green Racing Honda) 5th fastest in the test: "It felt so good to be back [following his off-track injury in 2003]. It was really nice being in the car, just driving again. The car was very good these past couple of days. We've got a little bit of work to do yet, but we're certainly going in the right direction."
