Spin Ends Matsuura's Bid in Toyota Indy 300
Kosuke Matsuura spun on Lap 158 of the 200-lap Toyota Indy 300 this afternoon after getting onto the dirty part of the track while attempting an outside pass on Tomas Scheckter during a late race restart. Matsuura was running in sixth place at the time. The incident involved several cars, including teammate Scott Sharp's #8 Delphi Panoz/Honda/Firestone.
Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic ARTA Panoz/Honda/Firestone:
"I had a really good race car today. I was able to drive inside and outside. On the last restart, I was overtaking [Tomas] Scheckter outside Turn One. I think we were three wide and, at that time, I was driving on the outside and got up into the tire marbles and dust. I spun and hit Scheckter. I am very sorry for the other drivers that crashed. It was a tough day."
Tom Anderson, Managing Director:
"The day ended a little sooner than we expected here at Homestead. Kosuke had the Panasonic car running very well today. On the last restart, he had a good draft going and the cars in front were a little bit slower than he anticipated or, for whatever reason, somebody was a bit slower in the lead group. It forced Kosuke wider than he should have been. Wide enough to initially get around, but with the new tires from the pit stop not totally up to temperature and with the light marbles against the wall, basically the track was too slick for a car to be running high. The back end came around and caused quite an incident. One of those racing things and, unfortunately, a lot of people got caught up in it. All in all, a good weekend and we're looking forward to going to Phoenix."
