IRL IndyCar Series Season-Opener Set For March 6, 2005
MIAMI, FL (August 3, 2004) - For the fourth consecutive year, Homestead-Miami Speedway will host the IRL IndyCar Series season opener with the 2005 running of the Toyota Indy 300 on Sunday, March 6. The IRL IndyCar Series features the same cars and drivers that compete annually at the Indianapolis 500. The season-opening Toyota Indy 300 showcases these same cars racing side-by-side at speeds over 200 miles-per-hour on Homestead-Miami Speedway's state-of-the-art 20-degree variable banking.
"South Florida will once again be the ultimate location to open the IndyCar season," said Curtis Gray, President Homestead-Miami Speedway. "Following an incredible IndyCar debut on the Speedway's new banking, fans will once again have the opportunity to see these amazing athletes compete at the 2005 Toyota Indy 300."
Two-time Indianapolis 500 champion and Miami resident Helio Castroneves and two-time IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr. of Marlboro Team Penske headline the drivers expected to compete at the 2005 Toyota Indy 300. In the 2004 Toyota Indy 300, Hornish edged Castroneves in a thrilling photo finish decided by just .0698 seconds.
Other drivers expected at the 2005 Toyota Indy 300 include current IndyCar Series points leader and Miami resident Tony Kanaan of Andretti-Green Racing, 2004 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice of Rahal-Letterman Racing and 2003 IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon of Target-Chip Ganassi Racing.
