HEMELGARN RACING AND Lyn ST. JAMES CHARGED FOR INDY 500 CINERGY CORPORATION TO JOIN SPONSORSHIP TEAM
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 8, 1997) =97 Veteran Indy car driver Lyn St. James will be behind the wheel for Hemelgarn Racing when the green flag falls in the eighty-first Indianapolis 500 May 25. St. James will team with last year's =91500 winner Buddy Lazier on the Hemelgarn group and is receiving a financial boost from Cinergy Corporation, the nation's 13th largest investor owned electric company. Cinergy is joining the Lifetime television network in the car sponsorship, which will be identified as the Lifetime TV/Cinergy entry.
"It's very exciting looking to the month of May," said St. James. "I'm very proud to be competing in my sixth Indy 500 with one of the top teams in the Indy Racing League and being associated with a corporation of Cinergy's stature. Teaming with Buddy, we should make a statement for Hemelgarn in this year's run."
"We are delighted to have a driver of Lyn's calibur come on board," said Hemelgarn Racing owner Ron Hemelgarn. "Not only does Lyn bring a wealth of talent and experience to our group, but is also just the type person you would like on your side. What better representative for May?"
St. James has set 31 national and international speed records during her professional racing career and is known as one of the top drivers in the world. In 1992 St. James was the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year and has qualified for the race every year since.
Hemelgarn Racing has entered cars at the Indy 500 since 1978 with Lazier's checkered flag last year earning the team its first ticket to victory circle. The company is based in Indianapolis and is in its second campaign of full series racing with the Indy Racing League.
Cinergy Corp., headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, serves 1.4 million electric and 450,000 gas customers in Indiana, southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky. Its power marketing and trading organization serves retail customers in Illinois, New Hampshire, and New York with additional customers to be served in 1997 in Michigan and Massachusetts. It recently was awarded contracts for the full electric requirements of Bristol, Va., beginning in 1998 and Southwestern Electric Cooperative in Illinois beginning in May.
"This is an excellent opportunity to continue our efforts to build Cinergy's name recognition by being involved with the highly competitive sport of Indy car racing," said James E. Rogers, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cinergy. "We are most pleased to be associated with Lyn St. James and Hemelgarn Racing, who have built an excellent record of success."
As part of its sponsorship, Cinergy will receive prominent name identification on St. James car and on Lazier's ride as associate sponsor. It will also be identified on team uniforms, track side equipment, garage area signage and transporters.
Cinergy will also have the right to use a Hemelgarn Racing Indy show car at special events for a period of a year as well as personal appearances by St. James and Hemelgarn personnel during May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
