INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001 - Standout Indy Racing League team Kelley Racing has signed 1999 Indy Racing champion Greg Ray to a multiyear contract, team general manager Jim Freudenberg announced Nov. 1.
Ray will join 1996 Indy Racing co-champion Scott Sharp as Kelley's drivers for the 2002 Indy Racing Northern Light Series season, which starts March 2 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
"It's hard to find the words to express how excited I am about this opportunity," Ray said. "I've spent a lot of a time with (team owner) Tom Kelley and Jim Freudenberg discussing the racing business and what makes a team successful. Successful businesses and relationships are all about surrounding yourself with good people.
"I can't think of a better team, from A-to-Z, that has such a good foundation and race program than Kelley Racing."
Kelley Racing has recorded six victories and eight MBNA Poles in four seasons since its first full season of Indy Racing in 1998. Sharp has earned five of those six wins. Sharp also won the MBNA Pole for the 2001 Indianapolis 500 for Kelley Racing.
Ray has competed in the Indy Racing League since 1997 and has 13 career MBNA Poles, a league record, including the pole at the 2000 Indianapolis 500. He also has five career victories.
"Any time you can bring a series champion on board with Greg's on- and off-track abilities, you have to be excited," Kelley said. "We're just ecstatic that we were able to put this deal together.
"I remember a few races this season when he and Scott (Sharp) went head to head battling for position. I don't expect that competitiveness to stop because they're teammates, but it will definitely provide for even more exciting times for Kelley Racing."
