Goodyear-equipped drivers claimed the fastest four times and six of the top 10\ during the opening day of practice for the Indy Racing League's Mid-Atlantic 200 at Dover Downs International Speedway in Dover, Del. IRL points leader Scott Goodyear set the fastest time a 19.746 seconds, or 182.315 mph. Walt Disney World winner Eddie Cheever Jr. was second fast at 19.773 seconds and Atlanta winner Scott Sharp was third at 19.777 seconds. Mark Dismore was fourth at 19.795 seconds. Davey Hamilton (sixth at 19.868 seconds) and Jeff Ward (ninth at 19.925 seconds) were also in the top 10 on Friday.
PAUL LAURITZEN, Goodyear IRL Operations Manager: “The Goodyear Eagles gave our teams remarkable consistency and durability, allowing them to set the fastest practice times in both sessions today. Dover is a difficult track to engineer, but the Goodyear tires are performing well and that allows the teams and drivers to look at other areas to make a race car go fast around this one-mile oval. We're looking to continue with that level of performance through qualifying and during Sunday's race."
SCOTT GOODYEAR, Panther Racing: "We're pleased with the performance, especially after missing most of the first session. We're just trying to fine tune and find some speed and run in traffic a little bit. I think we've got a reasonable race car; there's still a few things we need to do to it to get it ready for Sunday. So far everything is going as planned with our tires. The Goodyear tires are very good from both a grip level and a longevity level; we'll just keep on evaluating them and get ready for our full tank runs tomorrow."
SCOTT SHARP, Kelley Racing: "You hope that when you're the defending champion of a race that you can roll the car out and have it be fast without much work and the team has done just that. We're pleased with the car. The Goodyear tires are great, we're trying both options and primes to come up with a good combination for ourselves. They're hanging in there well. There's not much wear, they have good temps and things are good."
MARK DISMORE, Kelley Racing: "(Chief engineer) Chris Coxon has done a good job for me all year long. The laps sort of surprised me, honestly. The track is a big improvement over last year, although it's still bumpy. The Goodyear tires are good, but the track keeps changing as we lay more rubber down, so we'll know more tomorrow."
