INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, July 21, 2003 -- IRL IndyCarTM Series driver Felipe Giaffone has been released from the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana in Indianapolis and is in his hometown of Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to Dr. Henry Bock, medical services director for the Indy Racing League.
Giaffone, the 2001 Bombardier IRL Rookie of the Year, is continuing to recover from fractures to his right leg and pelvis suffered in an accident with Dan Wheldon on Lap 56 of the Kansas Indy 300 on July 6 at Kansas Speedway,
"Felipe is returning home to Brazil to continue his rehabilitation," Bock said. "His rehabilitation is going well."
While in Brazil, Giaffone is under the care of Dr. Moises Cohen, a renowned Brazilian surgeon who specializes in sports injuries and operates a physical therapy facility. Giaffone, 28, plans to undergo his rehabilitation five hours a day, seven days a week
"I'm feeling great," Giaffone said. "The trip to Brazil was not as bad as I thought it would be. I think this will be the best thing for me, to be back home in my native country for a while with my family and work out with Dr. Cohen and his staff everyday. He's worked with all the big drivers and athletes in Brazil, and I plan to work harder than I ever have in my life so I can get back into the Hollywood car for the last three races of the season. That's my plan, anyway. This is a great facility, and I've heard great things about it.
"Again, I want to say thanks to everyone in the racing community. They've been so great with their phone calls and e-mails and cards and letters and everything."
Giaffone said he plans to return to the United States to watch both the Belterra Casino Indy 300 Aug. 17 at Kentucky Speedway and the Firestone Indy 225 Aug. 24 at Nazareth Speedway. He scored his first IndyCar Series victory last season at Kentucky Speedway.
Further updates about Giaffone's condition will be provided when available.
